Synopsis

In his first feature-length desktop documentary for cinema, filmmaker Kevin B. Lee delves into the historical traces of extremist propaganda and the efforts of those resisting its violent impacts. 'Afterlives' explores how to confront the violence encoded in this media, reaching beyond its toxic effects to engage power structures spanning from the colonial past to the digital age. Moving between virtual and physical environments, the film encounters an artist, an activist and a researcher, who each use the legacy of violent extremism to create new images and narratives with new possibilities for the future.

	Synopsis

A bush dances through the empty corridors of a school, young people gather in a circle of chairs. The school bell rings and, under the guidance of two teachers, the group starts to move. From unimpressed to amused, the young people cross the room and answer introductory questions. With the help of the game, we slowly approach the topic of today's workshop: sex education.

Later, divided into two groups, it is the students who ask the questions, anonymously on small pieces of paper. At their core, many of them revolve around the same idea: What is normal?
As the conversations become more personal, it quickly becomes clear that sex education is more than just facts from a biology book. Our nature is always in motion and the bush shakes its leaves.

	Synopsis

In the south of contemporary Italy, a community devotes
itself to divinatory practices dating back to Roman antiquity,
such as ornithomancy and the interpretation of celestial
phenomena. In the midst of these tormented lands, a series
of gestures and attitudes emerge, opening up new
horizons.

Director’s Statement
Arancia Bruciata is situated between ethnography and speculative stories, proposing a parallel world, opening a breach in the
surrounding gloom. It is a film that seeks, invents and builds refuges, alternative stories, joyful micro-resistance practices. Arancia
Bruciata is a world in which people use rituals inspired by divinatory practices to encourage us to contemplate, listen to and explore
their natural environment in a unique way. This community, linked by practices that resonate with each other, invites us to step outside
our established spatio-temporal reference points and take a fresh look at things. A divinatory calendar punctuates the film, its omens
define the narrative. Using the calendar I decided to construct a fragmented narrative that would unfold over several seasons,
following meteorological phenomena and the movements of the sky. These omens contaminate the writing and direction of the film.
The idea is to move into a different concept of space and time, one that is less mathematical, where things neither add up nor divide, a
non-linear temporality and movement in short.

Inextricably blending the real and the imaginary, Arancia Bruciata establishes new interconnections of signifiers between landscape,
history, practices and people, the film sets up a singular world that puts forward hypotheses in order to create a horizon of expectation.
A possible looking back. Survivals of past realities. A seed of vitality whose ever-present powers it is a question of exhuming.

	Synopsis

Dani Gal’s new mini feature deals with the racial phobias resulting from the colonial imaginary and their transmission through music. His film reenacts a case study from Martinican psychiatrist and anti-colonial writer Frantz Fanonʼs book Black Skin, White Masks (1952): a young White French woman suffers from a nervous disorder triggered by the sound of African drums—prohibited by colonial regimes in Africa because they were suspected of carrying signals of rebellion.(text by steirischer herbst)

	Synopsis

There’s probably no other citizen of Gelsenkirchen who has ever mastered Nō singing and playing the Shakuhachi flute as authentically as Uwe Walter. He has lived in the mountain village of Miyama north of Kyoto for three decades and emulates the local residents, whether they earn their living on the fields, breeding cattle or hunting. People tend their gardens, repair fences to keep away the macaques and grow their own rice. Uwe has become perfectly Japanese, at one with his environment. However well-suited his Ruhr area wit makes him as a figure of identification, the camera keeps a respectful distance, more reserved than Uwe himself. Only at one point does it come touchingly close: When he is forced to say goodbye to an essential part of his past in the interest of the village community. But the real subject of this film is not the German with his greyish blonde curls but rather that very community, portrayed by Rainer Komers in bittersweet polyphony. It emerges in the children’s games, the adults’ pursuits and the old people’s tales, in the summer downpours of the rainy season, the white moon over the nocturnal village and the blood-red leaves of autumn.(text by Christoph Terhechte, DOK Leipzig)

	Synopsis

The river Tara is situated at the outskirts of the Italian port city of Taranto. “River of Good Fortune” is what people call this place ridden with legends, whose waters are said to have healing and magical powers despite its being toxic. Today, Taranto is considered one of the most polluted cities in Europe due to high levels of dioxin emissions and masses of dust emitted by a colossal steel factory, ILVA.
Through poetic and precise images, TARA explores the parallel between economic and ecological exploitation, while following people living at the margins and trying to survive in the ruins of post-capitalism.Throughout this complex landscape, we follow a young researcher on her forays through the city.
TARA develops a polyphony of narratives and a cinematic topology of a region where Pasolini had found the setting for his film Gospel According to St. Matthew in the 1960s. The film unveils the river as a model for a never-ending precarious condition: a resistant place where faith, class-consciousness and a new relationship with nature might flourish.

	Synopsis

Starting with a map of former uranium mining areas in Saxony and Thuringia, the film embarks on a dizzying journey through time, underground, above ground and into space. In doing so, it traces the sedimented narratives that surround the element uranium materially, geopolitically and metaphorically. How can the spectrum of the visible be shifed to bring its invisible radiation into the picture, to make it audible or perceptible?

	Synopsis

The bus stop “Europe”
is located on an arterial road in a small French suburb. A few
blocks, a brasserie, a kebab shop and a bus that shuttles between
the hospital and the forest. This is where Zohra Hamadi (Rhim
Ibrir) lives, her summer beginning with the end of a long history
of illness. For the first time in her life, Zohra can walk upright,
virtually pain-free.
All that’s missing now is her husband Hocine, waiting in Algeria to
finally get a family reunification visa and board the next plane to
Zohra. But with the end of her treatment, Zohra loses her right of
residence in France. She becomes – for her social environment as
well as for the audience – a protagonist forced into invisibility,
silenced, as she loses her job and her flat. Family and friends
leave for their holidays, while she is left behind in an empty
world.

This empty world becomes a stage for Zohra, equipped with a handful
of keys to the flats of others. She reclaims visibility by
inventing her future, and not just one, but several, which she
plays out in variations. And with this, Zohra’s struggle for her
space in Europe begins.
